Surround Sound Information:
New Year’s Eve 2005 "Toast of the Nation"

For the first time in history, broadcasters will have the opportunity on New Years Eve to Broadcast Surround Sound to North America’s NPR Radio listeners. New broadcast technology installed at these stations by Harris Corporation and Neural Audio will enable all listeners to enjoy the broadcast with their clock radio, two speaker stereo systems, and of course, home theater-style surround sound systems, America’s fastest growing consumer segment.

In addition to the new technology installed at NPR stations, Neural Audio has introduced a surround sound receiver technology that matches what listeners hear at their neighborhood movie theater but over their favorite NPR channel! This technology can be heard at select New Year’s Eve "Toast of the Nation" venues and will be on store shelves in the spring.

Also, Neural Audio's "Stereo Transcoder" algorithm preserves the imaging and spatiality of stereo and surround-sound content that NPR broadcasts. So NPR customers with older matrix-style surround sound equipment can receive a full surround sound experience.

When listening to the broadcast through an older matrix-style surround sound system NPR listeners should maintain standard surround settings and avoid common user effects such as "Concert Hall", "Jazz Club", "Arena" and others.

The ITU Standard.
One valuable guideline for multi-channel broadcast and speaker set-up is the ITU standard. It positions the listener at the center of a circle of speakers. The center speaker is located at 0°. Left and Right are at ±30°, forming an equilateral triangle with the listener. Left surround and right surround are positioned at ±110°, with tweeters at or slightly above ear level.

Best results are achieved with five identical speakers, each equidistant from the listener. Additionally in 5.1 home theater systems, a subwoofer or .1 channel can be used for low frequency effects.
