NPR’s JazzSet Features Three New Shows in
5.1 Surround Sound
This spring, JazzSet
with Dee Dee Bridgewater – weekly music in
performance from NPR – broadcasts three new
shows in 5.1 Surround Sound. The performers
highlight the live music scene in three
cities across America.
First, from Denver, the sextet Convergence
plays original music at Dazzle Restaurant &
Lounge. This free-wheeling, spirited group
has been together more than 20 years. They
include the drummer/founder the Colorado
Conservatory for the Jazz Arts, Carmen
McRae’s pianist and bassist of choice, and
horn players with orchestra experience from
Woody Herman to Maria Schneider. Release
date for this JazzSet is May 8.
Then, headlining the 2008 University of
Michigan Jazz Festival in Ann Arbor, hear
the swinging, in-the-pocket Clayton
Brothers. Bassist John and saxophonist Jeff
Clayton have co-led this Los Angeles quintet
since 1977. On JazzSet, they spotlight other
brothers in jazz, with Jeff Clayton’s
compositions “The Big Daddy Adderleys” and
“The Jones Brothers.” The February 9 concert
capped Ray Brown Day, proclaimed by the
Governor of Michigan to honor the bassist.
JazzSet release date is May 22.
Finally, Grammy-winning John Patitucci’s
trio mates are Larry Koonse and Brian Blade
at the Kennedy Center Jazz Club. They fill
the stage and the room with improvisations
from an array of basses, guitars and drums,
for music by Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins,
and Spanish composer Federico Mompou. The
release date on JazzSet is May 29.
